Weather

Warmer, moist air surging northeastward this weekend from the southern United States will overrun the cold air at the surface over southern Ontario Sunday night and the result will be a widespread wintry mix.

right now, looks like an initial band of snow will spread northeastward across southwestern Ontario Sunday evening before changing to sleet and freezing rain from southwest to northeast Sunday night.

Freezing precipitation should change to plain rain in the Windsor area and along the Lake Erie region Monday morning.

In the GTA, expect an initial band of snow Sunday night and early Monday morning followed by sleet and freezing rain by Monday midday or afternoon.

Areas just north, northwest and northeast of Toronto could be in for a prolonged period of freezing rain through Monday evening.

There will be a second surge of Arctic air coming down from the far north next week. Looks like the core of this cold will once again focus east of the Continental Divide. Cold should be fairly widespread across the eastern two-thirds of Canada during the first week of February. Ski areas should be able to make plenty of snow! The continues to show another widespread outbreak of very cold air during the week of Feb. 4-10 from central/eastern Canada through the eastern U.S., which makes sense based on other factors that we are currently looking at.

However, signs also point to a gradual recovery in temperatures for the rest of the month as the doors to the source of the Arctic air begin to close. I expect to see more Pacific air spreading across Canada the second half of February as the coldest air retreats up into Alaska.
